Butterfly Chairs – Spreading the Wings of Comfort

By Mike Dillingworth

Butterfly chairs are basically hammock types that take support from steel alloy frames. They resemble humongous slingshots that, in the most ironic sense, can catapult the dweller into deep slumber. These chairs are designed to be foldable for portability while transitioning from the indoor living corner to the outdoor barbecue family reunion.

The brand Little MissMatched retails one for roughly 25 bucks. This has vibrant colors and whimsical patterns that could fit into children’s rooms. As with any other modern chair like a moon chair for adults or a papasan, their frames are composed of steel alloys that render them lightweight and easy to carry along for outdoor family activities. Mac At Home has a faux fur model in funky shades of green, orange and purple at just about 20 dollars. The faux fur is a soft retreat from the hardwood furniture, which offers a more comfortable seating platform due to the velvety feel. Another option would be the black butterfly chair with pink and white dots from LumiSource that retails for 50 dollars. The alternating pink and white pattern emphasizes the black and perfectly complements a study den in plain hues.

For options revolving around the hundred dollar margin, one can find a piece from Area Rug World.  The black and white 100% cowhide material has a price of $299.  The plain hues do not look dull at all.  And if push shall come to shove, something as fancy as the Artifort Butterfly Chair can command an ultra whopping $3354!  Reportedly designed by Pierre Paulin in 1964, the original design has been reintroduced to decorate mansions.  At such price, it would be too outrageous for a teeny apartment!  Material used is either cowhide or leather that sits on a thinly rustproof metal base.  For another pricey option for the exquisite and fine furniture lover, Horchow’s butterfly chair retails for about $1800, and this is extremely a far cry from Artifort’s although still expensive.  Cowhide has been a common denominator as fabric material because of its durability and modern statement.  Perhaps a cowhide rug that could perfectly match a cowhide butterfly chair would be a good combination.

So never underestimate the power of minimalism.  This chair is indeed just like a beautiful butterfly in full bloom that spreads its velvety wings into the world, ready to embrace a tired soul and offer him some dose of relaxation.
